The Power of a Signature Move
Many sports stars turn their identity into intellectual property by registering trademarks not only for their names, but also for nicknames, poses, slogans, signatures, and other distinctive features. A famous example is Usain Bolt’s iconic “Lightning Bolt” pose and his slogan “to di world,” both of which are officially trademarked.
Even without formal registration, athletes are protected by “image rights,” which allow them to control how their name, likeness, and personal identity are used commercially. In Bolt’s case, his trademark specifically describes a silhouette of a man in a unique pose, one arm bent toward the head and the other raised upward.
