Many sports stars turn their identity into intellectual property by registering trademarks not only for their names, but also for nicknames, poses, slogans, signatures, and other distinctive features. A famous example is Usain Bolt’s iconic “Lightning Bolt” pose and his slogan “to di world,” both of which are officially trademarked. Even without formal registration, athletes are protected by “image rights,” which allow them to control how their name, likeness, and personal identity are used commercially. In Bolt’s case, his trademark specifically describes a silhouette of a man in a unique pose, one arm bent toward the head and the other raised upward.

The Scoop that changed Cricket Bats

One of the most impactful cricket bat innovations came as recently as the late 20th century, focusing on improving the “sweet spot” of a cricket bat, i.e., the area that delivers maximum power with minimal vibration. Since bat size and weight are regulated, designers turned to a smarter solution: removing wood from the back to create “scoops,” reducing weight while improving balance. Although the Gray-Nicolls “Scoop” bat became famous in the 1980s, the idea was actually patented earlier by John Newbery in 1978 under US Patent No. 4,186,923. His design featured various scoop configurations to enhance performance. These lighter, better-balanced bats quickly became popular, especially in an era of heavy willow construction.

The History of the Duke Cricket Ball

The first manufactured cricket balls are believed to have been made by generations of the Duke family who operated as a cottage industry business between 1760 and 1841. The Duke family (Duke & Son) gained the Royal patent for their cricket balls in 1775. The success of the Duke made balls was the winding of thread around the octagonal piece of cork that formed the core of the ball. When the base was perfectly round with cork and thread, the leather cover was added. In 1851, Dukes triple-sewn ball won a prize medal at the Great Exhibition and a gold medal at the Melbourne International Exhibition in 1880. In 1920, Dukes merged with John Wisden and company, a manufacturer of cricket bats. In 1999, the company introduced the white ball for that year’s Cricket World Cup. The company was acquired by Indian businessman Dilip Jajodia in 1987.

Invention that Changed Paralympics forever

Hugh Herr is a leading figure in biomechatronics who, after losing both legs below the knee in a climbing accident, went on to redefine modern prosthetics. His most notable invention, the BiOM T2 (EP1880694B1), is the first battery-powered ankle-foot prosthesis designed to mimic natural movement. Using sensors and microprocessors, the device replicates the function of a human ankle, reducing the energy required for walking while improving balance and agility. These advancements have had a major impact on Paralympic athletes, enabling better performance, more efficient training, and reduced fatigue.

Trademarking the Beautiful Game​

In 1970, Manchester United became the first English football club to register a trademark, kicking off what’s now one of the biggest brand portfolios in the sport. As of 2022, they own 686 registered trademarks worldwide, covering everything from names to logos and merchandising rights. By contrast, Liverpool F.C. hit a legal snag in 2019 when the UK Intellectual Property Office rejected their attempt to trademark just the word “Liverpool” for certain products and services, ruling that the city name is too geographically significant to be owned by one organization.

Addidas Predator Precision and the Patent Battle

In 1996, Hungarian inventor László Oroszi registered a patent in Hungary for a striped zone design on the tip of a football boot that was meant to help players shoot more accurately. In 2000, Adidas launched the Predator Precision boot, which reportedly included elements of Oroszi’s patented design without his permission. After years of legal dispute, the Hungarian patent court ruled in 2014 that Adidas had infringed on Oroszi’s patent, forcing Adidas to pay royalties on that range of the boot.

CR7 is the most popular nickname of Cristiano Ronaldo, combining his initials “CR” with his iconic jersey number 7. Interestingly, CR7 is officially a registered trademark. Olympic Properties

Olympic properties, as defined in the Olympic Charter, include elements like the symbol, flag, mascots, pictographs, motto, anthem, and even creative works linked to the Olympic Games. These elements are heavily protected under intellectual property laws, ensuring exclusive use and control. The Nairobi Treaty on the Protection of the Olympic Symbol further strengthens this protection by requiring countries to block unauthorized commercial use of the Olympic symbol without approval from the International Olympic Committee. Today, 55 countries are part of this treaty.

Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) has created a wide range of brand assets, including logos, words, titles, symbols, and other identifiers connected to its tournaments. These “Official Intellectual Properties” are protected not just in countries like the United States, Canada, and Mexico, but across the world through copyright, trademark laws, and rules against unfair competition and passing off. This means FIFA is legally protected against both exact copies and even confusingly similar versions of its branding. As a result, only official FIFA Rights Holders are allowed to use these assets for commercial purposes, keeping strict control over how its global brand is used.

The Rich Patent History of the Football Whistle​

Before whistles, referees used shouting or hand signals, like waving handkerchiefs, to manage football matches. In 1878, Joseph Hudson invented the world’s first sports whistle through his company, Hudson & Co. His design, the Acme Thunderer, was a small brass whistle with a loud, sharp sound that could cut through crowd noise. Hudson had initially entered a competition held by the Metropolitan Police in 1883 to design a better way to attract attention, which led to his whistle. It was first used in a competitive football match in 1884 and within a few years, whistles became essential for referees, replacing handkerchiefs entirely.

The Tennis Player who birthed Lacoste​

In the 1920s, René Lacoste (one of the best Tennis Players of the time) made a bet with his team captain about whether he would win a certain match. If Lacoste would win, the team captain would buy him the bag. Following his victory and also due to his precise and methodical playing style, the American press dubbed him “The Alligator”. Later, René Lacoste’s friend Robert George embroidered a crocodile onto a blazer that Lacoste wore for his matches.

With the crocodile logo, Lacoste redesigned tennis attire, replacing the long-sleeved shirts and trousers with a lightweight, short-sleeved polo shirt. This new style offered greater comfort and freedom of movement on the court. In 1933, he co-founded La Société Chemise Lacoste with André Gillier, producing the polo shirt with the iconic crocodile logo.

Before it was a logo, it was just a photoshoot moment. In 1984, Michael Jordan struck the now famous “Jumpman” pose while wearing New Balance sneakers during an Olympic shoot. A year later, he recreated the same pose, this time with Nike, while promoting the Air Jordan 1. From Hair Hacks to High-Tech Helmets​​

Before the modern helmet protection, football players relied on a surprisingly simple trick, growing their hair long to cushion blows to the head. That changed in 1896, when George Barclay introduced the first known helmet, a leather “head harness” crafted by a harness maker using thick straps for a snug fit but was used sparingly. Fast forward to 1971 when innovation took a major leap and G. E. Morgan patented a new kind of helmet with built-in air cushions. The result were the new HA-91 and HA-92 energy-absorbing, “microfit” helmets. They had valves on their crown to allow air to be pumped into vinyl cushions that were crammed into every space inside the helmet. The player put it on and then had it pumped up to fit firmly around the player’s head.

A Shoe filled with Air​​​

Marion Franklin Rudy, the mind behind one of the most influential innovations in footwear, wasn’t a shoe designer or a Nike insider, but an aeronautical engineer. Over his lifetime, he secured more than 250 patents, yet his most enduring contribution came in the form of a simple but powerful idea: a gas-filled cushioning system embedded in a shoe sole. After perfecting the concept, Rudy pitched it widely across the footwear industry, facing repeated rejections before finally getting a meeting with Phil Knight at Nike in 1977. What followed set the stage for a collaboration that would redefine athletic footwear. Today, the result of the collaboration lives on as Nike Air.

Smooth Operator​

Frank Zamboni and his brothers originally ran a business selling block ice, but as refrigeration technology advanced, demand quickly declined. Adapting quickly, they opened an indoor ice rink called “Iceland” in 1940. The rink’s popularity created an unexpected problem, maintaining smooth ice was incredibly time-consuming. A team of five workers needed nearly 90 minutes to scrape, sweep, wash, and recoat the surface. Determined to streamline the process, Zamboni engineered a solution. By 1949, he had developed a prototype ice-resurfacing machine, later patented as U.S. Patent No. 2,642,679, capable of completing the entire job in just 15 minutes. Mass production followed in 1954, and the machine gained global recognition at the 1960 Winter Olympics.

When Howard Head noticed that traditional tennis racquets twisted on off-centre hits, he saw an opportunity to rethink the design. His solution? A lighter, more flexible racquet made of aluminium with a larger head eventually known as the Prince Classic. At first, the oversized design was dismissed by professionals as unconventional. But recreational players quickly embraced it for exactly those reasons: a bigger “sweet spot,” better control, and more power. The shift didn’t take long, once top players like Arthur Ashe and Pam Shriver began winning with Prince racquets, scepticism gave way to widespread adoption.
